Our Clay County Funeral Home believes that when considering cremation, it is important that you are aware of the many options available to you beyond Direct Cremation (no services or ceremonies).  Your choice of cremation does not limit your choices.  Cremation replaces ground burial — not the funeral.

Before cremation you can have a period of family or public viewing/visitation and a funeral service.  After cremation you can have a memorial service at the graveside, in the funeral home, or a location of your choice.

Decomposition of the body in the earth (after burial) is the slow oxidation of the body tissues. Cremation, on the other hand, provides rapid oxidation. No casket is legally required for cremation, just a simple container, which is strong enough to hold the body. This could bea box of rough boards, pressboard, or heavy cardboard. You may rent a casket to use if viewing/visitation is to take place before the funeral.

After the body is cremated …
1. The remains can be stored by the family and perhaps kept on display in an urn or other container.
2. You may take the remains in the simple plastic box supplied by the crematory and distribute (“scatter”) them over the land or water.
3. The remains can be placed in a niche or a crypt within a columbarium.
4. The remains can be buried in the ground in a regular plot.

Decisions You Must Make If You Choose Cremation
· Will there be viewing, visitation, and/or funeral services before cremation
· What urn to use to contain the ashes
· Will there be a memorial service following cremation
· What to do with the cremated remains
