Alan V. Martin

Alan V. Martin, age 89 of Indianapolis, IN and formerly of Brazil, IN died July 2, 2010 in Indianapolis. 

He was born June 7, 1920 in Clay County, IN as the son of Marion T. and Nellie Lucas Martin.  He graduated from Van Buren High School with the Class of 1938, Indiana State Teachers College in 1946 and went on to earn his Masters Degree from Indiana University.  He married Betty M. Schane September 12, 1947 in Hobart, IN.  She preceded him in death February 15, 1994.

Alan was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army as a medical corpsman in the Pacific Theatre.  He was with American forces from Australia to New Guinea to the Philippines during the battles to liberate the Pacific islands from the Japanese.

Alan taught high school in several locations in Indiana and New Mexico including schools on the Zuni Indiana Reservation.  He retired in 1982 from Martinsville High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Basil Martin and Dale Martin, both of Brazil, IN.

Alan is survived by daughters, Linda Huttsell (Fred) of Indianapolis and Louisa Purcell of Bloomington; grandchildren, Emily Purcell, Megan Brown, and Elizabeth Kappler (Paul); great-granchildren, Alan and Anna Kappler; sister-in-law, Lucy Martin of Brazil; stepchildren from Alan’s second wife, W. Jean Sneddon-Martin, Susan Frick (Roger) of Indianapolis, Lori Horn (Troy) of Plainfield, Bill Sneddon and Mary Hyatt of Brazil, and TJ Sneddon (Susan) of Brazil.

Moore Funeral Home was chosen to provide cremation and memorial services.  Following cremation, a private graveside memorial and burial service was conducted Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Croys Creek Cemetery.
