Karl D. Clagg, age 81 of Brazil, IN died at 7:50 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011 at his residence.

He was born October 25, 1929 in Wood River, IL as the son of Wesley Karl and Helen Johnson McMillen Clagg. Following graduation from high school he completed his associate degree and began a long career as a maintenance supervisor with Anaconda/Alcan Aluminum. During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Army until his Honorable Discharge. On May 19, 1951 he married Benita Ward who has preceded him in death.

Karl was a member of Staunton Masonic Lodge No. 177 where he was a member for over 60 years, Terre Haute Zorah Shrine, Shriners International, Grand Order of the Sword of Bunker Hill – Highland Order No. 100 of Terre Haute, VFW Post 15015, Krietenstein American Legion Post 0104, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory – Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Southern Illinois, and a lifetime member of the Good Sam Club.

Karl was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and his family was always a priority. He loved the Lord, and was a deacon in his church for many years. Most recently he was a member of Bridgeton Baptist Church. He was also active in his community. He and his wife were volunteers for Vista Care Hospice for 10 years. He was known by many as "The Colonel". He also enjoyed going to Hardees every morning to visit with friends. Karl had a zest for life, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Benita; daughter, Kathleen Clagg; and sisters, Delores Flanders and Lela Hope.

He was the father/father-in-law of Karla (Craig) Erkkila, Karen (Joe) Britton, Kimberly (Charles) Wilkerson, and Wesley Clagg, and daughter-in-law, Rita Clagg. He was the grandfather of Jennifer Harvey (Greg), Miranda Peacock (Dale), Joshua Erkkila (Kaitlin), Kassie Gunn (Jake), Kara Randall (Joe), Jason Britton (Sherri), Jessica Loftus (Eli), Katie Jo Clagg, Kendra Clagg, Kallie Wilkerson, Benita Wilkerson, Maria Waterbury (Chuck), Jennifer Wilkerson, and Jessica Wilkerson; and great grandfather of 23 children. He was the brother-in-law of June and Con Slaton, Rita and Leo Gwyn, and Fleta and Billy Welch.

Visitation will be 4 – 8 p.m. Monday, March 14th at Moore Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Jack Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Hospice Foundation, 3401 South 4th Street, Terre Haute IN 47802.
