Betty (Phillips) Johnson Obituary

Betty Johnson, of Brazil, Indiana passed away at the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care after a brief illness with her family by her side on March 10, 2025.

Betty was born in Clay County, Indiana December 10, 1931, the daughter of Mont and Cebie (Cobb) Phillips. Betty was the 15th child of 16 children. She attended Staunton School, she worked at Pearce’s Orchard as a young girl. She was employed at G.C. Murphy’s Variety Store, Wylands Pharmacy in Brazil and later at IBM in Greencastle where she met her future husband Robert Johnson. They were married on December 14, 1957. They had two children, Philip Johnson and Marlene (Johnson) Lenz.

Betty was baptized in 1958 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the Forest Park Congregation in Brazil Indiana. She loved reading her bible and enjoyed all the bible study programs. She enjoyed sharing her faith and encouraging others of God’s kingdom blessings to come.

Betty enjoyed listening to music, gardening and fishing, especially playing games with the kids – she was young at heart. She loved cooking –the best cook ever. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mont and Cebie Phillips, husband Robert in 2018, her son Phillip in 2015, and all her siblings: Annabelle Barr, Lorene Brendle, Lucy France, Charlie Phillips, Mary Weaver, Arthur Phillips, Robert Phillips, Lester Phillips, Harlan Phillips, Ernie Phillips, Donna Jean Phillips, Iola Mozell Phillips, Joan Phillips, Deloris Phillips, Bonnie Swearingen Lister.

Betty is survived by a daughter Marlene Johnson Lenz (Stephen Lenz) and granddaughter, Brittania Lenz Whitaker (Blake) and great grandsons Heath, Roman and great granddaughter Vienna.  Betty is also survived by her granddaughter/daughter Jacquelyn Johnson Griffin (Jerry), great granddaughter Jadyn Griffin Melching (Connor), as well as many, many nieces, nephews and extended family members. 

Our heartfelt thanks to the Physicians, Nurses, Aids at Union Hospital, Harrison’s Crossing Health Campus and the Gibson Family Center.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, March 23, 2025 at 4:00 P.M. at the Terre Haute South Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses (3214 Hulman Street, Terre Haute, Indiana), with Tony Griffin officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:30 P.M. until the time of service. A virtual option will be available, contact a family member for details. A private burial will be held at Croys Creek Cemetery at a later date.
