Betty Niswonger-Green Obituary

Betty Niswonger-Green, 84, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at Hudsonwood of Brazil. She was born in Brazil on February 1, 1938 to the late Winford and Anna (Foulke) Niswonger. Betty graduated from Brazil High School before earning her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Indiana State University. She began her teaching career in the early 1960’s at Belle Union High School where she taught business courses. Later she taught at Potomac High School before moving to Stockton, California and teaching at Linden High School. While at Linden, she became involved in the American Field Service exchange program, which promotes student exchanges between in the United States and foreign countries. Betty served as the high school advisor, district representative and President of the Central California AFS Chapter. During these 17 years, she met students from all over the world and helped them adjust to American culture. 

During the 1981-82 school year, she took a leave of absence from Linden to teach in Jamaica. She taught at Montego Bay Community College, and felt it was one of the highlights in her life. Betty found the student in third world countries had a great deal of respect and appreciation for education and worked hard to pass their exams. She married Cecil Green in 1984 in Falmouth, Jamaica.

Betty took an early retirement in 1995 to return to Brail and spend time with her parents. She became a volunteer tutor at the Clay County Jail, and sponsored the Clay County Literacy Coalition. She was also very involved in local community bands, playing French horn in the Brazil Concert Band, the Jackson Township Band, The Marshall Illinois Community Band, the Terre Haute Symphony, as well as subbing for the Montgomery County Community Band in Crawfordsville. 

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Cecil Green; son, Edsell Green; daughters, Janet (James) Donell, and Tonya Green; sister, Barbara McCallie; as well as seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Moore Funeral Home in Brazil with Pastor Kerry Clear officiating and burial to follow at Cottage Hill Cemetery. The family will accept friends for visitation from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service.
