Daniel Swartz, Sr. Obituary

Daniel A. Swartz, Sr. 95, passed away on December 10, 2023. Dan was born on May 9, 1928 in Brazil to the late Charles and Bernice (Laughlin) Swartz. He ran cross country and played in the band at Brazil High School, where he graduated in 1946. After graduation he served his country in the United States Army, and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Rose Hulman and married Joyce Hull on February 3, 1951.

After several years with the Wasson Coal Company in southern Indiana, and Arketex in Brazil, Indiana. He and Paul Atkinson founded The Colonial Brick Corporation in Cayuga, Indiana. Daniel served as President of the company for over fifty years manufacturing specialty brick which was sold to dealers throughout the Midwest. Colonial Brick was the last coal-fired brick plant in the United States. Dan loved to play golf,and he was an avid hunter and fisherman. In his later years, he spent Sunday mornings at the First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife Joyce Swartz of Brazil; sons, Eric (LaFonda Woolf) Swartz of Bowling Green, Danny (Carol) Swartz of Indianapolis, Henry (Zanna DiBartoli) Swartz of Indianapolis, and John Swartz of Terre Haute; brother, Hugh Swartz of Long Boat Key, Florida; grandchildren, Luke and Corey Swartz, Ethan and Aaron Boring, Macie Klaypak, Caleb and Collin Swartz; Brittany Gooding, Bree Rosen, and Zachary Swartz; fifteen grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews and other extended family.

A private graveside service will be held at Summit Lawn Cemetery in Brazil. A celebration of Daniel’s life will be held at a later date in the spring.
