James Earl Gerber, 93, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born in Clay County on January 2, 1929 to the late Roy and Ruth (Lucas) Gerber. James graduated from Brazil High School in the class of 1948, and served his country in the United States Army. He married Mabel Johnson on April 18, 1950, together they attended Wesley Chapel and raised 6 daughters. After coming home from the military Jim worked for the City of Brazil, drove an Omar truck, worked for Western and Southern Life Insurance, Hercules and finally as a guard at the Putnamville Correctional Facility.
In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, tinkering, visiting his cabin on the river, and talking on the C.B. radio. He was preceded in death by his wife Mabel; daughter, Debra Cox; brothers, Ted, John, and Harold Gerber; and his sisters, Virginia and Mary.
Survivors include his daughters, Karen (Eric) Stearley, Janet (Steve, Sr.) Little, Donna (Jim) Raines, Lisa (Gretta) Childress, Jamie (Doug) Chrisman; Jim (Wanda) Mayle who is like a son; sister, Mayme Cox; grandchildren, Karen (Tom) Tedder, Chris (Lori) Cox, Ericka (Jason) Layne, Lindsey (Brad) Horn, Steve (Katy) Little, Jr., David (Melissa) Little, Janice Raines-Head, J.R. (Betty) Raines, Neil (Sierra) Taylor, Brandon (Katie) McMahon, Lance (Sara) McMahon; 30 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; as well as other extended family members.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Moore Funeral Home in Brazil with his grandson Brandon McMahon officiating and burial with military honors to follow at Welsey Chapel Cemetery. The family will accept friend for visitation on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service.
