James “Hippy” Micheal Newport, 71, passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023, the opening day of Indiana’s Coon Season. He was born on November 17, 1951 in Brazil, Indiana to the late Herbert and Vivian (Stanz) Newport. Mike attended Patricksburg High School and retired from both RCA and the Local Laborer’s Union #204. He was also the co-owner Bitch ’N Bitch Kennel. Hippy married Lisa Hiland on June 6, 2008. He was a member of the United English Breeders and Fanciers Association, the U.K.C and N.K.C.
Hippy lived for coon hunting, but also enjoyed mowing grass, bowling, raising hell, and all you can eat shrimp.While he stayed plenty busy, he always found time to spend time with his kids and grandkids who were the light of his life. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie Newport; sister-in-laws, Angela and Evelyn Newport, and great-granddaughter, Khloee Newlin.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Newport of Brazil; son, Ryan Hiland of Clarksville, Tennessee; daughters, Sandra (Robert) Buchanan of Roachdale; Jeanetta (Chris) Hill of Harmony, Amber (Jason) Buchanan of Brazil, Jammi (Dale) Chamberlain of Spencer, Lynn (Mike) Geraci of Brazil, Bridget (Jeremy) Torbert Franck of Brazil, and Liz (Eric) Gold of Iowa City, Iowa; brothers, Robert Newport of Clay City and Randy Newport of Brazil; sisters, Charlotte (Dave) Dinn of Lyons, Indiana and Kelly (Bill) Moore of Brazil; sister-in-law, Teryl Newport of Yakima, Washington; Special friends, Darrell Patterson and Justin Reppert; 32 Grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at the Brazil Coonhound and Field Trial Association (250 East State Road 42, Brazil, Indiana 47834) with Pastor John Pierce officiating and burial to follow at Fiscus Cemetery. The family will accept friends for visitation on Monday from 3:00-7:00 P.M. at Moore Funeral Home in Brazil and again on Tuesday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service at the Coon Club.
