Verlin C. Cantrell, 85, passed away on July 2, 2026 at Union Hospital. He was born in Paintsville, Kentucky on March 26, 1941 to the late Cecil and Edith (Castle) Cantrell. Verlin married Sharlene Carper on March 25, 1961. He was the owner of Kord Label, as well as a landlord.

Verlin enjoyed spending time with family, watching westerns, and sports. In his earlier years, he played horseshoes, baseball, and loved fishing with his brother-in-law Jolly Cooper. Verlin had a love for his dog Buddy, and was an accomplished musician, playing multiple instruments including the guitar, and the dobro.

Verlin was preceded in death by his wife, Sharlene; brother, Albert Cantrell; and sisters, Virginia Blair and Neva Lyons.

Survivors include his daughters, Brenda (Charles) Shaw, and Lois (Shane) Downing; grandchildren, T.J. (Sasha) Modesitt, Mitchell (Candra) Modesitt, Vanessa (Christy) Modesitt, Cory Smith, Brandon (Stephanie) Smith, Sarah (Dillon) Jones, Logan (Audrey) Downing, Drake (Cayla) Downing; 16 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Moore Funeral Home in Brazil with Pastor Jeremy Noel officiating and burial to follow at Clearview Cemetery. The family will accept friends for visitation on Saturday from 10:30 A.M. until the time of the service.
